  • Shingle transfer trial has begun - 16 April

Working with Hastings Borough Council, we’ve started stockpiling shingle at Hastings ahead of its planned transfer to Pevensey Bay.

This new trial to transfer shingle locally will help maintain beach levels and reduce flood and erosion risk for Pevensey Bay in the short term. It’s an important step in managing today’s coastal challenges as we continue shaping future plans for the medium and longer term.

Take a look at the team and machinery in action:

  • Pevensey Beach Manager update - 10 April

On Friday 3 April Storm Dave brought breezy conditions and increased wave heights over the spring tide, causing some localised erosion and areas of cliffing. Our recycling team returned on 7 April and have already repaired the affected areas.

    Upcoming Beach Work
    • Beach monitoring and recycling continue until the next spring tide on 18–19 April.
    • A water bowser is on site to help reduce dust during works.
    • General beach recycling is expected to wind down by the end of April, weather permitting.
    • Public safety works also continue, with the EA removing loose planking, bolts and large

    Shingle Import Update
The Sospan Dau couldn’t deliver the additional shingle import in March due to adverse weather but will return later this year. The EA is exploring alternative, more available sources of shingle, including the following trial.

    Hastings Shingle Transfer Trial
A new collaboration between EA and Hastings Borough Council marks a significant step forward in local shoreline management, supporting both coastal protection in Pevensey with locally sourced material and navigation in Hastings.
    • From 15 April, 7,000 m³ of shingle will be moved by road from Hastings to Sovereign Harbour (Mon–Fri, excluding 4 May).
    • Shingle will be delivered near Martello Tower 64, then distributed between the rock spur and Old Martello Road over the following weeks. This work will provide valuable additional material ahead of the next recharge planned for the autumn.

By the end of the 2025/26 season, over 36,000 m³ of shingle will have been added to the beach and delivered a proactive recycling programme.
We have also received new timber to improve existing groynes and wave screens.

We’re aware of a technical issue affecting our webpage and are working to resolve it.
Thank you for your continued support during these essential works to protect your community from the risk of flooding.

  • Environment Agency South and Southwest update - 30 March

Spring is in full swing on the Sussex coast - and so is our work to keep communities safe from flooding.

This season, we're moving 5,000 cubic metres of shingle from Eastbourne to Pevensey Bay, where it acts as a natural sea defence.
We're also taking delivery of timber that will be used later this summer to install new wave screens along the Pevensey and Eastbourne Coast.

This work is part of a wider £8 million investment this year to protect more than 3,000 homes and businesses from flooding, and it's just the beginning.

In the long term, the scheme could safeguard up to 18,000 properties along 15km of Sussex coastline over the next century.
We're also doing this sustainably — our team is using a hybrid bulldozer on site, cutting fuel use by around 30% thanks to its part-electric engine.
  • Pevensey Beach Manager update - 19 March

Our team is currently recycling shingle along over 7.5 km of coastline - moving material built up at Cooden and placing it between Old Martello Road and Sovereign Harbour to help maintain beach levels. Because the harbour arm blocks natural longshore drift from Eastbourne, we also bring shingle in through a bypass, transporting material by road.

Later this week we’ll be working at White Point. The tipper trucks will begin moving material from Monday 23 March for around 5-7 days, delivering it to the North East Beach.

If you’re visiting this area, please use Eugenie Way or Caroline Way while

  • International Women's Day - 8 March

    supporting image
Today, we're proud to celebrate International Women’s Day

We are fortunate to work alongside many women whose skills and dedication make a difference every day, strengthening our organisation and the communities we serve.
This day also highlights the importance of supporting girls and women to explore opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths). A diverse, inclusive workforce strengthens our ability to respond to the climate emergency and reduce flood risk. By championing equality and widening access to STEM careers, we can better meet today’s challenges and shape a more resilient future for all.
