Pevensey beach management update - 21 October

The season continues at pace, with all systems operating smoothly. The Hastings recycle operation will be completed by the end of this week, importing approximately 6,000m³ from Hastings onto the beach at Sovereign Harbour and moved to areas of need along the coast.

The electric powered Eastbourne bypass finished on Friday last week. The trial not only added shingle to the Northeast Beach in Sovereign Harbour but really helped us to understand whether electric machinery can operate effectively in the demanding beach environment. Early findings indicate it works well and would bring added benefits to residents by reducing noise and air pollution. This trial will help us develop the infrastructure needed to make the use of electric plant an option as we move forward in the longer-term future.

The Sosan Dau is extending the recharge (weather dependant) and likely to run until later November. So far, it has deposited 18,000 m³ providing increased resilience to the Pevensey Bay frontage.

The first named storm of the winter season 'Austen' is approaching on Friday 23 October and the impact is likely to continue for quite a few days coinciding with the spring tide. The beach team will therefore need to work over the next few days outside of normal working hours at low tide and at the weekend, this will be for both ahead and straight after the likely storm impact.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience these coastal flood defence works cause and will return to normal operating hours as soon as possible.
