Pevensey Beach Manager update - 10 April

On Friday 3 April Storm Dave brought breezy conditions and increased wave heights over the spring tide, causing some localised erosion and areas of cliffing. Our recycling team returned on 7 April and have already repaired the affected areas.

Upcoming Beach Work
• Beach monitoring and recycling continue until the next spring tide on 18–19 April.
• A water bowser is on site to help reduce dust during works.
• General beach recycling is expected to wind down by the end of April, weather permitting.
• Public safety works also continue, with the EA removing loose planking, bolts and large timbers.

Shingle Import Update
The Sospan Dau couldn’t deliver the additional shingle import in March due to adverse weather but will return later this year. The EA is exploring alternative, more available sources of shingle, including the following trial.

Hastings Shingle Transfer Trial
A new collaboration between EA and Hastings Borough Council marks a significant step forward in local shoreline management, supporting both coastal protection in Pevensey with locally sourced material and navigation in Hastings.
• From 15 April, 7,000 m³ of shingle will be moved by road from Hastings to Sovereign Harbour (Mon–Fri, excluding 4 May).
• Shingle will be delivered near Martello Tower 64, then distributed between the rock spur and Old Martello Road over the following weeks. This work will provide valuable additional material ahead of the next recharge planned for the autumn.

By the end of the 2025/26 season, over 36,000 m³ of shingle will have been added to the beach and delivered a proactive recycling programme.
We have also received new timber to improve existing groynes and wave screens.

We’re aware of a technical issue affecting our webpage and are working to resolve it.
Thank you for your continued support during these essential works to protect your community from the risk of flooding.
