What work is taking place on the beach?
We are carrying out ground investigations along the Eastbourne and Pevensey Bay coastline.
This involves drilling, sampling and small excavations to collect samples from the beach and the ground beneath it.
These samples help us understand:

Typical set-up for beach investigations, including drilling equipment and temporary safety fencing
Why are these investigations needed?
These investigations are an important step in planning future beach improvements and coastal flood protection works (expected from 2027). They help us understand the current condition of the beach and groynes so we can design effective, safe flood defences for the local community.
Where and when will the work take place?
Investigations will take place at multiple locations along the Eastbourne and Pevensey Bay frontages. The map below shows the planned locations for beach investigations along the Eastbourne and Pevensey Bay coastline.

Pink markers show investigation points, mainly located around groynes. Work will move between locations and each site is temporary.
Works are expected to take place:
Working hours are:
Will there be any disruption?
There may be some temporary, localised disruption while works are taking place near specific groynes.
However:
Some noise from machinery is expected during working hours, but this will be kept to a minimum wherever possible.
What will I see on the beach?
You may see several types of activity, including:
Each location is temporary and will be returned to its original condition once work is complete.
There will be a small contractor compound at Sovereign West car park, along with equipment stored at work areas. The compound will house equipment, welfare facilities and staff parking. It will be securely managed and removed after the works are finished.
