Community BlueScapes

Working with people and nature to improve our places.

Communities have the power to tackle climate change. Partnerships and collaboration are vital. The more we work and plan together, the more we can achieve for local people, places and our environment.

Our areas of focus

Prepared communities – Together, we are harnessing the power of local communities, organisations, specialists, and government to increase our knowledge and skills. We are making our places work better for us and preparing for extreme weather events like flooding.

Healthy landscapes – We are creating and changing green and blue spaces (like parks and wetlands) to cope better with extreme weather.

Innovation – We are making space for discussion, learning, and sharing. By bringing together local people we can find the most effective and innovative solutions.

Our project area

We are focusing our efforts on the Beverley Brook Catchment from Richmond Park to north Barnes in Richmond and Roehampton in Wandsworth.

Our project will

  • Improve flooding resilience with communities using new methods and ideas
  • Work with the community to shape and create the project, giving it a momentum beyond the project
  • Equip the community with knowledge about what they can do
  • Gather evidence to inform more investment, both locally and across the country
  • Create and adapt green and blue spaces to cope better with extreme weather events. Benefits include better water quality and biodiversity, amenity and recreation space. People will have opportunities for better health, wellbeing and community.

How our project is testing innovation

Our project is a community-led project focusing on natural flood management solutions.

We are testing five resilience actions as part of the Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme.

  • Integrated water management solutions
  • Nature based solutions
  • Community infrastructure resilience
  • Community and voluntary sector action to be better prepared and recover more quickly
  • Property flood resilience
