Why is the flood warning service being replaced?

The Environment Agency's flood warning service is nearly 30 years old and the system at its core now needs to be replaced. All digital systems require ongoing investment and improvements to ensure they remain secure and resilient. While the existing service has performed exceptionally well, a significant rebuild in 2024 will help meet future flooding challenges.

What is the ‘Get flood warnings’ private beta?

The private beta 'Get Flood Warning' service is a test version of the Environment Agency's new flood warning service, being trialled before its wider public launch in late summer 2025. Participants will register for warnings, receive test alerts, and provide feedback on their experience.

    Who can take part?

Anyone who lives in a flood risk area or is interested in receiving warnings for a flood risk location or property can take part. You do not need to be registered with the existing flood warning service. We welcome participation from a range of people across England, including individuals, businesses and those who require extra support to use digital services. If you do not know if you are at risk of flooding from rivers and the see, the please visit our Check your long term flood risk(External link)(External link) service.

Do I need any special equipment or technical knowledge?

To use the online service, you need access to a device such as a computer, smartphone or tablet to register and receive warnings.

Will this affect my existing flood warning service?

No, the test, private beta service is separate from the current live flood warning service. If you're already registered to receive flood warnings with the current service, you'll continue to receive them as normal, throughout the trial.

    When will testing take place?

The service will be available for testing for approximately three months, starting mid to late February 2024. Once you’ve filled in the Expression of Interest (link on right) we will email you when it's time to start.

What happens after I’ve filled in the Expression of Interest?

Please wait for us to contact you between February and April with instructions and a registration link.
