Abingdon Together: Resilient to Flooding.

Parts of Abingdon are at risk of flooding. The Environment Agency, Oxfordshire County Council and other partners cannot reduce the risks alone.

Your community can make a significant difference. You can play a role in reducing the risks of flooding, the impacts of the flooding and your recovery from flooding.

This engagement page is intended to help bring a community action group together and streamline it's development.

What is the current situation?

Some residents have created a Tithe Farm Community Flood Plan. As well as the EA, this has been reviewed by the Abingdon Town Council, Oxfordshire County Council and the Vale of the White Horse District Council.

It has been very well researched and contains lots of useful information about preparing, responding and recovering to flooding.

Please take a bit of time to read it and consider your own preparation.

How a Flood Action Group group could use this engagement platform.

This page can be used to carry out surveys, questionnaires, host discussion groups, FAQ's, and links to other resources. The page can host video, podcasts, photographs and interactive maps. How it is used and by us will evolve over time.

FAQ's and other supporting information are provided for your reference.

If you have ideas or suggestions as to how your community can be better prepared for flooding, please reach out to the Flood Resilience Team.

The Temporary flood barrier

A temporary flood barrier was tested on 10.09.25. The temporary barrier can be deployed if our rainfall triggers are met.

There are limitations with the temporary flood barrier. It will only protect those homes at the highest risk. This includes those that were flooded in 2024. However, if you experience a flood similar to that in 2007, the water will simply pass around the edges of the barrier. There is also a risk that water will rise through the ground or through drains behind the barrier, but pumps can be deployed to hopefully reduce this risk. Finally, the Environment Agency may lack the time or available resources to erect it. This could happen if we receive more rainfall than was forecast.

Many of you have questions about the barrier. The Flood Resilience Team have created a document that will hopefully answer many of these questions. It will be visible by following this link.
