Bradford Watchlist site 145
The Site
A waste site in Bradford, Yorkshire was first brought to the Environment Agency’s attention in July 2026. Documented as watchlist site 145 as part of our nationwide enforcement operation, enforcement officers detected around 2,000 tonnes of baled household waste that had been illegally deposited.
The problem
The nature of the waste has led to widespread complaints of foul smells affecting neighbouring homes and business properties. This odorous waste also risks attracting vermin, posing a real threat to health. A potential fire risk to nearby infrastructure also needs to be considered as part of any future action plan.
The action we've taken
The Environment Agency led work to ensure that the site was secured and closed by the landowner, while partners from Bradford Council took steps to prevent any further vehicles from entering the site.
We have launched a criminal investigation to identify those responsible for this waste crime and, so far, this has resulted in the successful seizure of an HGV.
We welcome the support and backing of government at the highest level in acknowledging the seriousness of the scourge of waste crime. In August, Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Labour MP for Bradford West, Naz Shah visited the site, announcing that it had been identified for clearance subject to the necessary assessments.
As we pursue our ongoing investigation into illegal activity, we will continue to work with our partners to closely monitor the site and the environmental and community risks it presents.
