The WINEP programme for the Warwickshire Avon is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable water management and environmental stewardship in the region.
The Warwickshire Avon Nature for Water Project is a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing water resilience and addressing environmental challenges in the Warwickshire Avon region. This project involves a consortium led by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust including Severn Trent, Environment Agency, and Warwickshire County Council who are working with The Nature Conservancy’s Nature for Water programme. It will deliver new holistic ways of assessing catchment challenges and co-funding solutions.
The project will work closely with local landowners to adopt sustainable practices to benefit agriculture and the environment and covers a range of river quality and water resource issues. This will include a reduction in pollutants and improved overall health of the river ecosystem, measures to manage flood risk and protect local communities, and the restoration of natural habitats.
The programme includes 41 projects addressing river quality (phosphorus, ammonia and metals), 3 projects to address abstraction licence modification, 7 projects to address storm overflows and 130 projects to enhance monitoring at wastewater sites. The Nature for Water project aims to identify and promote nature-based solutions which address the WINEP programme objectives. Severn Trent Water is investigating how these issues can be addressed holistically by building on the existing flood risk reduction programme and Local Nature Recovery Strategy in the catchment.
