WINEP Case Studies: Thames Water Ex.2

Bracknell Sewage Treatment works (STW) upgrade

Thames Water will be upgrading the sewage treatment works at Bracknell STW in Bracknell Forest LA. The scheme is forecast to help protect and improve the quality of the River Cut.

The scheme will improve the ability of Bracknell STW to treat the volumes of incoming sewage, reducing the need for untreated discharges in wet weather. Thames Water expects this location to meet all government targets for storm overflows by 2030 - 2035.

The project is forecast to reduce concentrations in treated effluent of phosphorous, cypermethrin, and biochemical oxygen demand (this is a measure of the amount of oxygen that aerobic microorganisms need to break down organic matter in water and is used to assess the level of organic pollution in water bodies).

Among the many treatment process improvements planned for this site, Thames Water plan to install an innovative Granular Activated Carbon process, ensuring the highest quality of treated effluent.

Other Examples:

There are over 800 actions within the WINEP proposed by all water and sewage companies to reduce phosphorus from sewage treatment works.
