Advanced Proteins
What permit does the operator hold?
The Environment Agency issued Advanced Proteins (AP) with an environmental permit EPR/HP3508BE on 17 February 2020. Previously, the permit was held by John Pointon & Sons Ltd.
AP is an animal rendering plant that processes animal by-products not intended for human consumption. The site handles both Category 1 materials, which present the highest risk and require strict disposal controls, and Category 3 materials, which are considered low risk and typically originate from animals declared fit for human consumption.
Regulatory Activity
We have seen a recent increase in complaints regarding the site and are continuing to undertake regular site inspections and odour monitoring. The Environment Agency will continue to monitor the hot weather contingency planning and wider climate change adaptation measures, the delivery of actions arising from the MBM storage incident, progress in improving NOx emissions performance, the effectiveness of odour control measures, and the site's ability to manage increased throughput during periods of exceptional demand. Further regulatory engagement and inspection activity will be undertaken over the coming months. The Environment Agency will continue to work with the operator to drive improvements and will take appropriate regulatory action where evidence of permit non-compliance is identified.
