Background

    Where is this site?

Granville Woodhouse Landfill (also known as Redhill Landfill) is located in Telford. The operator holds an Environmental Permit. Potters (Midlands) Ltd took over the permit in January 2019.

What permit(s) does the operator hold?

EPR-RP3739QB is an environmental permit that allows the site to accept a wide range of non-hazardous and biodegradable wastes. This permit contains conditions that control site operations, including landfill cell construction, waste acceptance limits, emissions control and environmental monitoring.

Granville Landfill is a heavily engineered landfill formed from individual cells constructed with a clay and geomembrane liner to protect the surrounding area of the cell.

    Regulatory Activity

Since March 2024, reports of odour from Granville landfill have increased. After ongoing monitoring, we identified steps for the operator to take in order to improve the landfills gas management system and odour control. The operator has now completed these actions.

They have installed new gas wells and have completed the capping work required. These measures aim to provide greater protection for the community and the environment, as well as maximising gas collection in the long term so incidents of odour are less likely to occur.

We will continue to monitor odours, track progress against the agreed plan and review the operator's management plans to ensure it is working in accordance with its permit.

Latest News

    What is the latest news?

    October 2025

The site operator is currently filling the final waste cell on site and installing horizontal gas wells to begin capturing gas from newly deposited waste. This is an important step in controlling landfill gas emissions.

In December 2025, the operator has arranged for permanent gas wells to be installed in the previously filled cell to enhance long-term gas collection. While this work is necessary, it may result in a temporary increase in odour during the drilling process.

The onsite gas plant continues to burn captured landfill gas, helping to reduce odour and carbon emissions while supplying approximately 1 MW of electricity to the grid. These activities form part of the operators ongoing obligations to manage gas and odour in line with their permit requirements.

We are working closely with the site operator and the local council to monitor progress and ensure that environmental standards and permit conditions are being met. We continue to carry out regular inspections to monitor progress and ensure compliance.
