Viaduct Sluice and the surrounding river

Option Purple

We would only carry out reactive maintenance and repairs as the structures gradually fail, and also allow for fish passes to be added in the future. There would be similar levels of plant and animal habitat along and in the river. The water levels would remain similar to the current situation.

Option Red

The gates remain at Viaduct sluice and there would be no change in water levels. This would reduce the opportunity to seek environmental improvements through changes in river flows as the river would remain impounded.

Option Blue

We would remove the gates and create a rock ramp fish pass through the structure. In addition, we would create another rock ramp within the river upstream of the railway viaduct. This would offer the opportunity to improve the biodiversity for approximately 5.5 km of watercourse and the margins only for a further 1.5 km. The water level would reduce by approximately 1.6m upstream of rock ramp proposed near to the railway viaduct when compared to the current level.

Option Orange (national economically preferred option)

We would remove the gates at Viaduct sluice and create a rock ramp fish pass through the structure. This would offer the opportunity to improve the biodiversity of the watercourse for approximately 6 km, and the margins only for a further 1 km downstream. The water level would reduce by approximately 2.3m upstream of the railway viaduct.
