Flood Hydrology Improvements Programme at EGU
Anita Asadullah (Lead Hydrologist) and Chris Skinner (Senior Hydrologist) will be at EGU European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly(External link) - Europe’s largest gathering of geoscientists.
Please join us:
Tuesday 29th April,15:35–15:45 (CEST) - Room 2.44 for their presentation Science to Practice: Embedding new hydrology approaches for flood management decision-making(External link) (EGU25-6993 | Orals | HS1.3.4(External link) ) where they will discuss how the transition of science and methods from research into everyday operation practice is fraught with challenges and barriers. They'll present the findings and highlight and map the key blockers to embedding new methods.
Friday 2nd May, 10:45–12:30 (CEST) - Hall X4 | X4.189 you can read their poster Improving operational flood hydrology in England – progress and challenges(External link) asking questions such as 'do you want to change policy with your research? Or, is it actually practice you want to change?' The poster will show the policy, guidance, and practice landscape for flood hydrology in England, discussing how research impact can be more effective and quickly realised by engaging with operational agency's, rather than policy makers.
We would like to:
- Create new connections with members of organisations with a similar role to the Environment Agency in other countries.
Share the latest developments of the Flood Hydrology Improvements Programme on embedding new science and methods into operational flood hydrology practice.
Learn more about the cutting edge of international research in operational hydrology.
If you would like to arrange a coffee meeting with Anita and Chris, please contact FHIP@environment-agency.gov.uk(External link), stating what you would like to discuss.
Find out more about the Flood Hydrology Improvements Programme (FHIP):
FHIP is a cross-cutting initiative taking on some of the biggest challenges in flood hydrology across the UK.
Working in collaboration with teams across the Environment Agency and the other UK nations, we are delivering projects that will modernise our approach to hydrological modelling. This includes supporting and promoting our hydrological data, expanding and refining the range of hydrological methods we use, and enhancing the way we work.
Read more on our completed projects:
Can we support your research?
We are unable to support or fund any research projects. If you would like to request research support from the Environment Agency please visit https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-research-support-and-partnerships(External link)
About EGU
The European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly(External link) is Europe’s largest gathering of geoscientists. Last year’s event was attended by nearly 21,000 people. EGU has many subject -specific Divisions and the largest is the Hydrological Science Division, making the General Assembly a key meeting in the hydrology calendar.
The UK 25-year Flood Hydrology Roadmap:
The FHIP emerged from the UK 25-year Flood Hydrology Roadmap(External link) and many of our objectives and actions are deliberately aligned. The Roadmap, published in 2022, was the culmination of a period of engagement with the UK hydrological community and the final document was co-produced.
The Roadmap is now active and lead by a Governance Board and supported by a Science and Technical Advisory Group, both drawn from hydrology experts across practice, industry, and academia.
