Molember Sluice and the surrounding river

Depending which option is chosen, we would see a varying amount of water level change and potential for biodiversity improvements in this area of the Scheme.

Option Purple

We would only carry out reactive maintenance and repairs as the structures gradually fail, and also allow for fish passes to be added in the future. There would be similar levels of plant and animal habitat along and in the river. The water levels would remain similar to the current situation.

Option Red

Three of the four gates will be replaced with fixed crest weirs and the remaining gate will be replaced with a new gate with the intention to automate its operation. This would not offer any improvement on biodiversity, as the river would remain impounded and a faster flowing river is required for biodiversity improvements.

Option Blue

We would replace the gates with concrete weirs. This would improve the biodiversity of around 0.1 km of watercourse. The water level would reduce by approximately 0.6m compared to the current level immediately upstream of Molember.

Option Pink

We would replace the gates at Molember sluice with a rock ramp. This would offer the potential to improve the biodiversity for approximately 0.5 km of watercourse. The water level would reduce by approximately 1.2m compared to the current level immediately upstream of Molember.

Option Orange (national economically preferred option)

We would remove the gates at Molember sluice. This would offer the potential to improve the biodiversity for approximately 1.3 km of watercourse. The water level would reduce by approximately 1.6m compared to the current level immediately upstream of Molember.
