Maintain the current water levels throughout the Lower Mole Scheme - Option Red
A map of the scheme for this option.
We will keep the gates at Island Barn and Viaduct. There will be a combination of gates and fixed weirs at Molember. Plant and animal habitat along and in the river will not change.
This option will look at replacing three out of the four gates at Molember Sluice with fixed weirs and replacing the gates at Island Barn Sluice and Viaduct Sluice, including installation of a small fixed crest weir and fish pass within one of the gates openings at Viaduct. Fish passes will be installed at Zenith and Wilderness Sluices, and the sluice gates at Royal Mills will be replaced with a fixed crest weir. This option offers a rationalisation of the structure at Molember Sluice while maintaining the existing water levels throughout the Scheme.
Further information on specific locations and assets:
Molember Sluice
At this location, 3 of the 4 gates will be replaced with fixed crest weirs and the remaining gate will be replaced with a new gate with the intention to automate its operation. This will not cause any changes to the water level upstream of the structure.
Island Barn Sluice
At this location, all gates will be replaced with new gates, with the intention to automate their operation. This will not result in any changes to the water level upstream of the structure.
Viaduct Sluice
At this location, a small, fixed crest weir and fish pass will be installed within one of the gates openings. Additionally, all gates will be replaced with new gates with the intention to automate their operation. This will not cause any changes to the water level upstream of the structure.
Zenith Sluice
At this location, all the existing gates, the electrical equipment and the walkway will be removed to allow for the construction a rock ramp fish pass on the existing structure. This will not result in any changes to the water level upstream of the structure.
