Changing Coasts East Riding

Introducing Changing Coasts East Riding

The Changing Coasts East Riding (CCER) Project is an initiative aimed at supporting and preparing communities for the challenges posed by coastal change.

Delivered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, CCER is part of a nationally funded effort through the Coastal Transition Acceleration Programme (CTAP), which is funded by DEFRA and managed by the Environment Agency.

Background

Over the next 100 years it is predicted that significant parts of the East Riding coast will be eroded, putting homes, businesses, and infrastructure at risk. This will affect people who live and work by the coast, as well as those who use it for leisure.

The aim is to explore a range of options and create long-term strategies to help communities prepare and respond to coastal change in the future and beyond the end of the project.

This is a unique opportunity to take action and ensure the East Riding can adapt to these inevitable changes, making sure coastal communities are better placed to continue to thrive.

Key Actions:

  • Understand the risks: Work together to get a clearer picture of current and future coastal change along the East Riding coast.
  • Create a long-term plan: Collaborate with communities, businesses, and other groups to develop a long-term plan for managing coastal change, with an ambition that actions continue even after the project ends.
  • Key assets: Identify and look at relocating community assets that are most at risk from coastal change.
  • Build local expertise: Work with universities, schools, and experts to build knowledge and skills to support long-term coastal change planning in the East Riding.
  • Explore funding options: Look into long term funding opportunities for coastal transition.
  • Share what we learn: Share what works (and what doesn’t) in coastal transition, to help shape national policies and funding.
