Flood and Coastal Innovation Early Careers Network

The Flood and Coastal Innovation Early Careers Network is a community for early career professionals in the Flood and Coastal sector. This group is supported by the Flood and Coastal Innovation Programme (FCIP).

We aim to:

  • Provide a platform for personal and professional development, mutual support, and networking among our members.

  • Facilitate training opportunities to develop new skills.

  • Improve collaboration between early careers representatives across the Flood and Coastal Innovation Programme through knowledge sharing, highlighting lessons learnt and outcomes.

  • Building a sense of community amongst early career individuals and those new to the industry; providing an opportunity to socialise in an informal environment.

  • Promote diversity, equality and inclusion in the Early Careers Network, and provide a welcoming and nurturing environment for all.

What are we doing?

  1. Broaden knowledge and skills: talks, workshops and group training sessions.

  • Monthly bitesize learning sessions - External speakers deliver talks on their specialist topic, with time for Q&As

  • Social events that allow networking and knowledge-sharing with other members

  • Monthly drop-in sessions – loose agenda and informal discussions.

  • Competitions and awards that recognise members' hard work and achievements. Award nominations to be made by the wider FCIP programme.

Membership

The Network is primarily aimed at individuals who are within the first 5 years of their career and individuals who are new to the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) industry (in their first 2 years).

Membership is predominantly focused on anyone directly/indirectly working on an FCIP project, including but not limited to local authorities’ officers, consultants, and academic researchers.

However, the Network welcomes anyone in the FCERM industry who is interested in its activities and believe their personal development would benefit from being involved.

As a network, we aim to meet fortnightly on a Tuesday at 9:30am. Our sessions include:

  • Bi-monthly drop-in sessions are 30 minutes.

  • Bi-monthly one-hour workshops.

  • Monthly bitesize learning sessions will last between 30 minutes and 1 hour.
