Central signposting to existing evidence, reports, data/platforms (e.g. EA’s Water Hub), good news stories and use case studies to demonstrate impact. Theme around key areas of interest.
Improve accessibility and interpretation of existing performance reports. Consider additional tactics to make information easier to understand e.g. explainer videos and infographics.

Improve existing EA and NRW WINEP/NEP interactive maps (2027 onwards) – filtering, categorisation, additional spatial layers (e.g. bathing waters, storm overflows, reasons for not achieving ‘Good Ecological Status’, SSSIs etc), and delivery progress. Enables clearer view of the location of investment and associated benefits.
Publish results of WINEP/NEP investigation projects in a searchable format. Addresses evidence gaps and ensures catchment/regional planning is better informed by latest evidence
Create and publish a simple dashboard to provide an overview of progress on delivery of WINEP/NEP schemes by water companies – building on existing Environmental Performance Assessment information.
Regulators and companies could work together on a trusted repository of open data. This could incorporate other data such as real time water quality metrics, citizen science data and relevant research. This would allow different audiences to create their own data portals and package data in ways that work for them.
Collate data to evaluate the environmental outcomes being delivered by water company expenditure (including non WINEP/NEP spend) including the contribution to national targets. Communicate this in an easy to understand format. This information is held by water companies and the data may be held in different formats so would be something to consider for the next price review.
A water data ”portal” that would facilitate searching, visualisation, and download of water data. Data could be searchable by geographical area and have water company investment activity displayed along with information about status, delivery, improvements, outcomes, etc. This could also incorporate other data such as real time water quality metrics and citizen science data. This would require a full assessment of the extent to which existing platforms meet audience needs, a set of user requirements, and decisions on who would own or manage it. This would be a long term, strategic option and would need to align with the transition to the new water regulator.
