Flooding Preparation

How can I prepare my home if I am at risk of flooding?

If your home is at risk of flooding, it’s a good idea to make a personal flood plan, even if you’ve never flooded before. This will make sure that if you receive a flood warning, you know what actions you need to take to help keep you, your family and your belongings safe. By considering these actions in advance, not only will you be better prepared to respond in an emergency, but you will be better equipped to recover from it in the long-term.

Your plan can include actions and considerations such as:

    • Sign up for the Flood Warning Service
    • Check that your insurance covers flood damage
    • Make a flood kit
    • Know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water

    Retford Beck Contingency Plan

When the Retford Beck contingency plan is enacted, high-volume pumps are set up to pump water from Retford Beck into the Chesterfield Canal.

The Environment Agency carry out routine pump training to ensure that staff are competent to quickly enact the contingency plan in an incident. In a major incident, we may as external partners (Nottingham Fire Service) for extra resource and equipment to help us manage the incident.

We ask the residents in the area to take into consideration:

    • Put dog faeces in the bins provided on Blackstope and Grove Lane. We do not want our employees to be setting pumps up surrounding dog faeces, this can lead to health issues. Our external partners can be reluctant to supply their equipment if it is not returned in the same state as delivered.
    • Access along Blackstope and Grove Lane may be limited when we are pumping. If you need your vehicle, Bassetlaw Council are able to support residents to use the car parks at Carolgate and Chapelgate, free of charge.
    • If residents are needing extra assistance to get out their homes or crossing over the pumps, Bassetlaw Council have a team available to help - call 01909 533533 to call for assistance.
